"Surprise!"
One of little boy's first favourites programme is Blue's Clues. There's one with an episode where Steve celebrated Blue's birthday with a party, cake, friends, balloons. And the Clues for that day was the answer to the question: What does Blue want for her birthday? Answer: A little live turtle pet.
When I watched that two day back again, trying to learn the birthday tune that he likes to mimic so much, I was thinking to myself: Who would actually want a live turtle pet for their birthday? (Undergoing "vocabularical" thoughts were all of the navel gazing kind: that's be more work, ma fan (troublesome), etc. Basically it boils down to the word: additional commitment. (maybe it was the past experience of caring for the goldfishes. filter, anti chlorine. food.)
Yesterday, we had a simple party at the park. Nothing elaborate. Church friends and family gather around. Let the kids run around and get wet in the stream. One very dear friend (who also has a toddler son) came excitedly and said, A, I dont know whether S will like his gift. It's still returnable. And she looked so excited, and happy. I was plesantly surprised because I was not expecting any gifts. So I said, Sure, I think it'd be great. Then she said, Maybe you should check it out first.
She came back after we unloaded, and she came back beaming. Then she held up this little blue transparent box. It took me a few moments to register (like a slow nodding of head). It was a little terrapin. In a little blue "cage". A baby "turtle". Just like Blue's Clues. Exactly like Blue's Clues.
I took the cage and thanked her. And silently wondered, whether the Lord was laughing in all this? And S, maybe he had wanted a little "turtle" too - after watching Blue's Clues?
Life never ceases to amaze. I mean, God - our Lord. He certainly has a sense of humour. God are You laughing up there? Please help us take proper care of it.
